Retreat of the Neocons

It was interesting to see my old mate George Dubya Bush on TV last night, trying to inspire "confidence" in the US allies to the effect of convincing them not to retreat from Iraq, poor fella had this pained Double-Glazing Salesman's smile on, making him look even more moronic than usual (it didn't help that I took the sound off whilst viewing and ironically got the full essence of his spiel).

His logic however is sound- a rushed withdrawal would be fatal and in any event impossible, however I refer to a withdrawal of US troops, not to British troops. The consequences of a rushed US withdrawal would be fatal for the region and the world would be horrific, in that it'd become a powderkeg of violent fundamentalist ideological significance, not counting the severe logistical cost.

This does not however apply to Britain, hence aside from political courtesy and minor psychological advantage, I fail to see what stops Britain from withdrawing its Troops, whilst it may seem mean, the region of Basra is lost anyway, with British Troops confined to their perimeter. Cutting ones losses becomes an inevitable prospect.

In this context, I overheard Dubya murmuring something a couple of days ago about action against Iran, suitably it was ignored by most serious commentators and more significantly by Iran- a measure of America's standing in the eyes of its prospective adversaries, pretty sad if the world's policeman becomes a bumbling joke, imagine quaking at the prospect of being arrested by Bonzo the clown. A man who is regarded even by his own party now as a liability, iwho has been effectively emasculated by Democrat control of the two Houses plainly is not in the position to start another war hence...

This is the cost of an ill-conceived war that has exposed America - and Britains weaknesses, a war which was conceived, pitched by and executed according to the plan of the Neoconservative Lobby.

As his lackeys desert him or fall i.e Rove, Gonzales et al; one must reflect as to how a country containing the highest concentration of the smartest people in the world could elect this man into office- twice. The answer is complex but one clue is the fact of 250,000 American's migrating to Canada after the elections. A tragedy for the world, nonetheless on account of the needless suffering occasioned by the Iraqi war.

As for the Neocons, well what can I tell you, these guys have been around for yonks, I remember during the Reagan years, there was a shadowy Ideological Think-tank group called the Heritage Club- now called the Heritage Foundation, which "advised" the White House on State policy in accordance with traditional American values- nice!

The Neocon Iraq strategy as usual was drawn up by pasty-faced, overweight Ivy-League closet megalomaniacs, without the slightest inkling of the operational, logistical and bless my soul Macro-Political effects of the feeble, watery plan they were pushing an dwhich had bare-knuckle stimulus from those two Corporate terrible twins- Rumsfeld and Cheney. Well we see the consequences, starting a war you can't win and can't retreat from, classic!

Anyway, the story of this war is all around us, I can't really add anything new, but to put the character of the Neocon lobby in perspective - at least in a light-hearted manner- I leave you with an old post I left about a year ago-

Neocons and Brain death

A lot of the initiative to invade Iraq came from the Neo-Conservatives in the US. Im not going to get into an argument about the pros and cons, (dated and tiresome, the facts speak for themselves). I shall however give you two pearls of wisdom from these paragons of a perfect society.
a. James Dobson, founder of right-wing group Focus on the Family, attacked SpongeBob Squarepants - the cartoon character at a black-tie dinner in the run-up to President Bush's inauguration, describing it as a Gay Icon, because it frequently holds hands with its best friend a Starfish named Patrick. Apparently the group Sister Sledge did a remake of the video for the song "We are Family" using shots of Sponge-Bob and planned to mail it to schools to promote the ethnic unity in diversity of America. This was criticised by Dobson as a clandestine attempt to spread Gay thought amongst young American children?!?
b. Tinky Winky - yes the hand-bag carrying Teletubby, was also criticised as Gay symbol by the Conservative Think-tanks because of his offending hand-bag.Now I recognise the significance of subliminal messages (hence the title of this bloody blog), but guys please!!
Anyway, Im glad about Brokeback Mountain and the Cowboy character in Village people (both of which I was indifferent to as entertainment, to be honest), because I really want to know what the Neocon's reaction to these two direct symbol's, ban Cowboys? These call to question Judgement surely? What worries me about the above instances is that it betrays an unhealthy disposition, the first thing I think of when I see Sponge Bob/Tinky Winky is not their Sexuality (Goodness me!!!) but either the humour or infant entertainment value respectively. If what you see is the former, then you need help and immediately too. Freud, Freud, Freud. Now about the decision to go to invade Iraq?

Responsibility

Forgive me for what may be termed a trivial pre-occupation with musical celebrity, but just wanted to say a few words about Amy Winehouse.

I would simply file her under the "Cesspit" Doherty Category were it not for her amazing talent, having said that, every adult has a responsibility not to just to himself/herself but to his/her loved ones.

No-one forces you to put a Crack-pipe in your mouth, or a needle in your arm, hence you must deal with the consequences- simple.

I like her music, but if she insists on destroying herself, thats her choice. Kill yourself if you want to, I think her music is brilliant but if she dies of a drug overdose, i'll find something else to listen to and of course mourn her wasted talent, but not for too long, the record company will find another star to sell, her husband will find someone else to sleep with and shoot with, sadly her family will be left with the real pain, but then I think they've done their bit. Its them I actually feel pity for

Re: Pete Doherty: An apology

I wish to do the noble thing and make an apology in respect of a comment I made regarding Pete Doherty, a profound and humble apology from the bottom of my heart.

In the course of the last post, I made reference to Mr Doherty being the only thing more useless than Compost. This is wrong, compost is extremely useful and a crucial agricultural necessity, whereas Mr Doherty is a completely gormless waste of organic matter.

To all compost and dungheaps, I say I am sorry to have even remotely compared you to Pete Doherty.
To Lynda, who wrote an interesting comment on the last post, I say spot on how the media can glorify such a man is beyond me.

Rant Resumes

No human is truly worthless. No human being is a complete waste of space. No human being is more hopeless than compost...Unless the human being is called Pete Doherty.

When is that talentless, vacuous, chemically suffused, toxic, pungent, diseased thing going to be put in Jail where it belongs, where perchance he may be forcibly bathed and scraped.
His walking around free, is a scandal pure and simple and an affront to semi-decent people who've had to do Porridge for far less.

To DD

I'm in a pretty Hippified Love child mood today, so enjoy the flow sans rant.

Just want to say thanks to a very, very good friend The Delectable Designer for all her help and support last year, in words and deed. A real superstar if there ever was one.

A truly courageous human being who overcame serious personal tragedy, picked herself up and built a small but very successful Design business, a woman with a heart and the guts of a Lion.

Truly proud of you mate and honoured to have known you and will even forgive your defacing my Blog- you nutter.

In honour of DD, I shall be placing a photo of twoPussycats, symbolic of the two Hustlers from the Bronx- Tyrone and Leroy, who were turned into Cats and live in her house, whilst still on the Run from NYPD. Joking of course (as in they're not on the run from the NYPD..)

Much love sis!
Ps/ I am reliably informed that another Hustler has joined the Surrey Posse- Stan the Man, a Tabby I might guess, careful DD, keep your credit cards out of their view.

Peace

Take a minute to sit down at a Bus-stop, when you're not in a hurry and just take in your surroundings ......if you don't get arrested for loitering) you'll see what we miss by just taking a step back.

Leave your house, without a definite destination or time limit on a sunday and just walk, you'll be amazed at how much you're able to gather your thoughts.......unless of course you're unemployed and are in any event compelled to linger on the streets every single day.

Message is that there is so much peace in stepping aside from the train of tension and seeing things from a lateral perspective i.e until you get mugged on the peaceful lanes of Britain, whilst taking in the beauty of this land.

Have a wonderful Bank holiday all, I am off to Bath to a nice little Cottage from whence I shall traverse the wondrous spectacle of the South Western spheres of this sceptred Isle by bike and auto and return on Monday for De Carnival, I shall be found loud, obnoxious and inebriated at the African stalls. All are invited apart from Rachel who shall only be allowed a Ribena..don't want my Godson/daughter emerging with a Beer gut do we?

Much love people!

The Human Rights Act: Chindamo and the Tories

The news rightfully was rife with the Judgement of the Immigration Appeal Tribunal which determined that Learco Chindamo, the Italian murderer of Phillip Lawrence the school-teacher should not be deported to Italy.
On an emotional note I am incensed by this because my views are and remain that a foreign national who is allowed to enter any country (Britain or Burma) should respect the laws of the country and when he ceases to do so, should be sanctioned under law and deported.
However there are a few facts of this case, which I believe have not been highlighted in the press and which I presume made the job of the Judge quite difficult:
a. Chindamo is half-Italian and half-Phillipino;
b. He was brought to the UK by his mother (from Italy) at the age of five;
c. He was 15, in effect a Juvenile when the crime was committed;
The reasoning of the Court was that his Human Rights would be infringed by his return to Italy on account of the following:
a. That he had no ties to Italy since he had not been there since he was 5;
b. That to remove him would contrary to his Human Rights of which such an exception whilst permitted in the public interest would be disproportionate;
c. Also considered were a Probation Office assessment of his present disposition, showing that he had reformed and was no longer a danger to the Public
In all honesty the principle of proportionality as used in this decision is not strictly prescribed in the Human Rights Act 1998, but the creature of a number of decisions intepreting the European Convention on Human Rights upon which the Human Rights Act is based.
The Human Rights Act provides the right, which in the public interest as defined by the Secretary of State can be overridden.
The principle of proportionality as defined was not a creature of statute strictly speaking but a Judicial concept, basically guidelines emanating from Case Law, in this instance the European Court of Human Rights and applied in a number of UK decisions e.g in R v Secretary of State Ex Parte Mahmood- dealing with the right to family life under Article 8 of the ECHR and guidelins for determining if a removal is proportionate, where there is a family life established as per Article 8 of the ECHR.
I do not agree with the decision of the Court in that Chindamo's father resides in Italy and indeed his extended family lives there and he could have been returned to Italy with the proper arrangements in place. However, I am loathe to criticise the Judge's because they had a discretion under the law which they applied, whether I disagree or not.
I am however concerned about the rabid noise from the Tories, particularly from David Davis, criticising the Human Rights Act. I've made my views clear on the efficacy of the Act previously and will say that the problem has not been the Act but the way its applied in Juducial decisions.
One area which certainly needs clarification is the question of balance between the UK constitution and the Act, this is a grey area which needs to be either debated and straightened out by Parliament or indeed by a referral to the House of Lords, possibly in this case.
Knee-jerk populist reactions, which deal with the superficial position and which pander to readers of the Sun and Telegraph are to reduce a very important decision to the realm of anecdotal political Pub tattle, thats not statesmanship, thats Speakers Corner politics.
I understand the Home Office is keen to appeal and I certainly hope their Lawyers do a better job on appeal, though I fail to see how they can succeed, being that factual issues which should have been capitalised on at first instance were not fully highlighted and the Appeals Tribunal interprets issues of Law and not facts.

Strong Medicine Pt 2

This was a comment in response to the last post on Strong Medicine, I don't really have too many words, please read on

Anonymous said...

Hi Seal,First of all, let me say that you do not have to publish this comment. This is just a way of dropping a piece of my thoughts . I am an animator from Nigeria resident in Germany. On the search for images of "Broad Street, Lagos" I found myself at your blog. Now having heard "Nigeria" your alarm sensors are on...right!! No agitation, I am not looking for someone who would help me clear some accounts of some folks...*laugh*Anyway, coming to the poin, your article "Strong medicine" impressed me immensely. It reminded me of some of my ideals that used to be very strong in my life. How i wish i read it 3 years ago...it would have helped me a lot to come out of a broken relationship mourned after at that time. Well, eventually I let go but before then, I stood the risk of having friends walk away from me because i was so brokenhearted almost to the point of depression..ignoring all the love that my friends were showering on me at that time. Now everything is perfect again. I eventually let the person walk, It took time but now i know i had made the right decision because it paved the way for me to walk into someone who let another person walk. Now the question between us has been "Where have you been all my life"
Thanks again Seal for this articleEven the secular Madonna once sang "There's no greater power than the power of goodbye" I wish a lot of people would learn to let go sometimes. Most interesting is also the line about letting go of people who would not help you in helping them properly..I willl keep that in mind and would spread the news. I bet a lot of people could use that in life!By the way, did I properly introduce myself? Maybe I would do that in my next visit and then you could maybe provide me with the opportunity of anonymously directing you to my REAL person.have a lovely day. I will come back becaus there is just a lot of stuff I would like to read heree.o (ms.)

Strong Medicine

I had a very moving conversation with a very good friend of over 14 years, whom I met up with yesterday and who I hadn't seen in 2 years. We discussed recent trials she had faced and I couldn't help respecting her courage and strong conviction.
Strangely enough I got home last night to find an email from another friend- one of these chain emails, you delete without reading. I read it though and was amazed at its poignancy.
The words are from a sermon by the Evangelical Pastor TD Jakes. I have my opinions about Evangelical Pastors, however the words were truly powerful and I foresee that there is something for everyone here, either in the past, present or future..
"There are people who can walk away from you. And hear me when I tell you this!
When people can walk away from you: let them walk. I don't want you to try to talk another person into staying with you, loving you, calling you, caring about you, coming to see you, staying attached to you. I mean hang up the phone.
When people can walk away from you let them walk. Your destiny is never tied to anybody that left. The bible said that, they came out from us that it might be made manifest that they were not for us. For had they been of us, no doubt they would have continued with us. [1 John 2:19] People leave you because they are not joined to you. And if they are not joined to you, you can't make them stay. Let them go. And it doesn't mean that they are a bad person it just means that their part in the story is over. And you've got to know when people's part in your story is over so that you don't keep trying to raise the dead. You've got to know when it's dead. You've got to know when it's over.
Let me tell you something. I've got the gift of good-bye. It's the tenth spiritual gift, I believe in good-bye. It's not that I'm hateful, it's that I'm faithful, and I know whatever God means for me to have He'll give it to me.And if it takes too much sweat I don't need it. Stop begging people to stay. Let them go!!
If you are holding on to something that doesn't belong to you and was never intended for your life, then you need to ...... LET IT GO!!!
If you are holding onto past hurts and pains ....... LET IT GO!!!
If someone can't treat you right, love you back, and see your worth ..... LET IT GO!!!
If someone has angered you ........ LET IT GO!!!
If you are holding on to some thoughts of evil and revenge ...... LET IT GO!!!
If you are involved in a wrong relationship or addiction ..... LET IT GO!!!
If you are holding on to a job that no longer meets your needs or talents .......... LET IT GO!!!
If you have a bad attitude ....... LET IT GO!!!
If you keep judging others to make yourself feel better ...... LET IT GO!!!
If you're stuck in the past and God is trying to take you to a new level in Him ...... LET IT GO!!!
If you are struggling with the healing of a broken relationship ........... LET IT GO!!!
If you keep trying to help someone who won't even try to help themselves ......... LET IT GO!!!
If you're feeling depressed and stressed ......... LET IT GO!!!
If there is a particular situation that you are so used to handling yourself and God is saying "take your hands off ofit," then you need to ......... LET IT GO!!!
Let the past be the past. Forget the former things."

Greatest Track and Field Moments

Sitting in front of the TV on sunday watching crap TV with the Energetic Environmentalist, (who after working out late morning, a long lazy beer lunch, still found time to do DIY around the house till 10pm). It occurred to me that I hadn't written about my favourite sport Track and Field athletics and decide to indulge in what I considered to be the greatest moments in Athletics, with links to the videos from Youtube, aside from the one I consider to be one of the greatest i.e Bert Cameron pulling up with a Hamstring after a 100m of the Semi-finals of the 400m at the LA Olympics, starting off again and catching up the field to qualify for the finals.

Comments

I've over the last few posts received salacious comments on the Blog, which I am not necessarily happy with and the most recent being this afternoon, whoever you are you know what I'm referring to. There is such a thing as going too far.
Can I plead with whoever it is to at least have some measure of respect for me and stop it. If its someone I know or indeed have been close to, I think its extremely unfair that this should persist.
Please, please this is enough, thanks.

Small Stuff

Anything you can't change either avoid/accept or ignore. Too much time is spent on pointless angst and frustration.

This journey is to be enjoyed and the simple path is filled with innate difficulty, why make it harder.
The sun's out dude, its a wonderful world (still so even if it was raining).

Have a great weekend in prospect.

The Celtic Con

How many times have people like me revelled in the use of the hallowed Ethno-Cultural description- Celtic, yes that description defining any cultural theme emanating from the British Isles and Ireland. Celtic people, Celtic symbols, Celtic music, Celtic style..wonderful, a thing of pride but what really is the truth of the origin of the terms. Well prepare to be shocked!

The first time the word Celt was used was by Herodotus in reference to the people native to the North of the Danube- which as I'm sure you're aware ain't Britain- at least I hope you know. The Roman name for the said persons being "Galli" (The Chicken people- interesting!). The natives of the British Isles were first described by the Romans- as "Britanni" and never as Celts.

A Welsh linguist Edward Lluyd in the 17th century, noted the similarities in the language of the people of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany and nicknamed the common language Celtic.

The simple fact is that the first Celtic ceremony was a spoof ceremony in Primrose Hill in 1792, by a group of Bards (modern day translation- Actors/Musicians), involving a circle of Pebbles, claiming to revive a ritual originating from the Celtic nation and its Druids.

Well thats its then, my whole romantic Celtic dream dashed, the whole concept being the fabrication of ancient luvvies and musicians, well there you have it.

Nancy Wake- Thrillseeker or Idealist Pt 5

Nancy Wake was the most decorated Allied servicewoman of World War 2 and it is reputed that if she had been a man, she would have been awarded two Victoria Crosses on account of her many acts of bravery and selflessness in service during the war.

Originally from New Zealand, she was born on the 30th of August 1912 and moved with her parents to Australia as a child. She ran away from home to become a nurse, saved up $200.00 and moved to the UK, where she trained herself to become a journalist and subsequently wrote for the Hearst Group. In the course of her work in the 1930s, she travelled extensively around Europe and made several romantic and social associations, which were fairly easy on account of her good looks and sharp wit. She was however noted as something of a social butterfly who craved the highlife and glitz (pic from 1932 at top).

She met and married Henri Fiocca, (in second pic from top) a wealthy French businessman in 1939, who its reputed gave her all the trappings of high society she craved and she indeed threw herself into the lifestyle of society as was to be expected.

The story would have ended there, but upon the invasion of France by Germany in WW2, nancy Wake, without hesitation and with the reluctant consent of her husband joined the French resistance acting as a Courier and assisted the escape of several Allied and Resistance figures. She formed a partnership with Captain Ian Garrow, the British Intelligence officer, with whom its reputed she had an affair.

Her work came to the notice of the SS/Gestapo, who nicknamed her the "White Mouse" because of her speed, slight size and efficiency. Whilst it was suspected that the wife of the wealthy Fiocca was the same person, it was almost unfathomable that a society cutie would both risk her life for the resistance cause/be such an efficient resistance figure. This however changed with the betrayal of the resistance in 1943. She had to leave her husband and try and escape from France and made five attempts - in the process being captured and escaping once- and finally succeeded on the final attempt.

She made her way to and formally joined the Special Ops Desk in the UK and not surprisingly was back in France in 1944, having been aerially dropped and re-joined the resistance as a Liaison between the British Intelligence and the Maqui (French Guerilla Resistance) and in fact led several operations. She was also responsible for co-ordinating resistance activities in the lead-up to Normandy Beach.

Her team of 7000, was personally resPonsible for killing 1400 SS operatives, remarkable, being that they were out-numbered almost by three times.. They were also responsible for several attacks on German installations.

She was as brave and effective a soldier as any man in any Army in WW2, famously she once killed an SS Officer with her bare hands, to stop him from raising an alarm during an operation, when asked subsequently what happened to the officer, with a dead-pan expression on her face, she simply ran her finger across her neck..

There were myriad tales of her acts of bravery and immense physical and mental strength, one being when she had to ride a bicycle on a journey of over a 100 miles through several German checkpoints to replace wireless codes destroyed to save them from the enemy.

After the war she was awarded several decorations, namely a. The George Medal; b. The US Medal of Freedom; c. The Croix De Guerre (thrice) and; d. The Medaille De Resistance; e. Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.

Nancy Wake could have lived her life through as a pampered Society -wife, but made a hard choice which not only endangered her life, but that of her husband, who as a result of her work had all his possessions seized by the Nazis and was eventually tortured to death for refusing to reveal her whereabouts.

There is a paradox in that at the time her husband, who plainly loved her dearly was being tortured on her account, she was allegedly conducting an affair with Captain Ian Garrow. It Is however not for us to judge.

Nancy Wake was one of the bravest soldiers- male or female of WW2, her acts took cold courage and incredible ability. I really cannot understand why she was never awarded the Victoria Cross, many less deserving have received the same and quite frankly this is a massive injustice.

Nancy Wake is still very much alive and lives in a rest home in the UK and still attracts considerable attention- she's pictured with the actress Cate Blanchette at bottom pic above.

Thrillseeker or Idealist? The answer is complex, she was first sensitised to the evil of Nazism in Vienna in 1935, that was the turning point for her and indeed the basis of her decision to fight rather than turn away as many of us would have. Was there a thrill? Maybe, but this was an incredibly brave woman and hence the distinction is absolutely irrelevant.

Sun Tzu- Thrillseeker or Idealist Pt 4

Two books have guided statesmen over the centuries on the essential precepts of Military policy and statecraft, these being The Prince by Niccolo Macchiaveliand The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

The former being certainly more popular on account of its cold, cynical precept. However one work in my view, defines in stricter terms the essential, dispassionate and effective precepts of statesmanship and warfare- The Art of War based on the principles of Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu was a Chinese General (a contemporary of Confucius) and member of the Shi who lived in about the 6th century BC , these being descendants of Chinese aristocracy of the Zhou dynasty, who had lost their fiefdoms during the Spring and Autumn periods in Chinese history (i.e a period between the 8th and 5th century BC, characterised by various struggles for hegemony, naturally resulting in loss of influence and land for the defeated).

The literary work by the original title- The Art of War was not written by Sun Tzu, but by Sun Bin his descendant, which was apparently more focused on Military tactics and logistical matters than pure strategy. Sun Tzu's philosophy being more accurately defined in his Military treatise, titled in his name as was the practice at the time. It does appear that his treatise as referred to did not give much insight into his life and the only authoritative source being the biography written by Sima Qian the Chinese Historian (or Historiographer) in the 2nd century.
Sun Tzu's treatise, however is what has been known in the west as the "The Art of War by Sun Tzu", whereas as mentioned the original source of the name was his descendant Sun Bin's work by the same title. The first translation being in French by Amiot in 1722 and then more famously in English by Lionel Giles in 1910.
Sun Tzu's teachings formed the basis of the creation of the Martial arts, according the the authoritative work by Zhuang Zhi (about the 3rd century BC), essentially citing Sun Tzu's military method as the theoretical basis of Asian Martial Arts.

Sun Tzu was more better described as a mercenary who found favour in the court of King Helu of Wu as a high-level strategist, which under Tzu's philosophy flourished as a Kingdom, conquering several territories surrounding it.

His strategies are defined as the world's first Military Strategy Text and a lot of the principles contained therein are more than applicable to modern warfare.

Here are a few examples of his quotes:

All warfare is based on deception.

Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.

Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?

Confront them with annihilation, and they will then survive; plunge them into a deadly situation, and they will then live. When people fall into danger, they are then able to strive for victory.

For them to perceive the advantage of defeating the enemy, they must also have their rewards.

For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

He who is prudent and lies in wait for an enemy who is not, will be victorious.

He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, will be victorious.

Hence that general is skilful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skilful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack.

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

If ignorant both of your enemy and yourself, you are certain to be in peril.

If our soldiers are not overburdened with money, it is not because they have a distaste for riches; if their lives are not unduly long, it is not because they are disinclined to longevity.

If you are far from the enemy, make him believe you are near.

If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.

If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt; if you know Heaven and know Earth, you may make your victory complete.

In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy's country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good.

Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack.

It is essential to seek out enemy agents who have come to conduct espionage against you and to bribe them to serve you. Give them instructions and care for them. Thus doubled agents are recruited and used.

It is only the enlightened ruler and the wise general who will use the highest intelligence of the army for the purposes of spying, and thereby they achieve great results.

Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.

Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster.

Now the reason the enlightened prince and the wise general conquer the enemy whenever they move and their achievements surpass those of ordinary men is foreknowledge.

Of all those in the army close to the commander none is more intimate than the secret agent; of all rewards none more liberal than those given to secret agents; of all matters none is more confidential than those relating to secret operations.

Opportunities multiply as they are seized.

Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance.

Prohibit the taking of omens, and do away with superstitious doubts. Then, until death itself comes, no calamity need be feared.

Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death.

Secret operations are essential in war; upon them the army relies to make its every move.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.

Supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

The enlightened ruler is heedful, and the good general full of caution.

The general who advances without coveting fame and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.

The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand.

The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy.

The opportunity to secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

The quality of decision is like the well-timed swoop of a falcon which enables it to strike and destroy its victim.

The skilful employer of men will employ the wise man, the brave man, the covetous man, and the stupid man.

The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.

The ultimate in disposing one's troops is to be without ascertainable shape. Then the most penetrating spies cannot pry in nor can the wise lay plans against you.

There has never been a protracted war from which a country has benefited.

Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.

Thus, what is of supreme importance in war is to attack the enemy's strategy.

To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

To see victory only when it is within the ken of the common herd is not the acme of excellence.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

When envoys are sent with compliments in their mouths, it is a sign that the enemy wishes for a truce.

You have to believe in yourself.

Sun Tzu was not your average gung-ho soldier, he was a true General and a Military thinker, who did not seek war as a vocation but as a necessary evil in the essential course of statecraft and was in fact a reluctant participant in Warfare, which he realised was the only way in difficult times for self-preservation. It is in fact stated that he abhorred war, but was a realist and in fact is regarded as one of the first advocates of the Realist School of Philosophy.
This is exemplified by the opening paragraphs of his treatise,
"The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.,The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger.
Heaven signifies night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons. Earth comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death. The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness.
By method and discipline are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure.
These five heads should be familiar to every general: he who knows them will be victorious; he who knows them not will fail."
These were the words of a man dwelling in cold hard practical fact and not that of a man who craved warfare for its empty sake, it was simply a tool of preservation.

He preferred a peaceful quiet life and it is reputed that he disappeared from view to live a quiet hermits life at the peak of his popularity and was not seen again till his death.

Sun Tzu, for all the bravado that is associated with his name was not a a war-monger, yet was undoubtedly one of the greatest Soldiers that ever walked the face of the earth.

His principles are applied by all manner of combatant today from Pentagon Training and Doctrination operatives to Felipe Scolari Portuguese Fotball coach, who claimed to apply his principles in defeating England last year.
It is also reputed that his work was studied and applied religiously by Stalin and Mao Tse Tung during the conflicts they were involved.
Thrillseeker or idealist? Neither, he was a realist.

The Manchester Guitar Mafia

I started out this post wanting to write on one of my favourite Guitarists- Aziz Ibrahim (above), the funky Pakistani Guitar Meister (Ex-Stone Roses, Simply Red, The Christians, Asia etc), who I was fortunate to watch at the Jazz Cafe, a few years ago promoting his solo album.
Researching further, it occurred to me that some of the most influential Guitars of a generation were Mancunians.
What is it about this grey old town that inspires musicianship, certainly not the cheery surroundings, Football clubs, Gang culture or indeed the pretentious glass buildings in the city centre. I recall a couple of quotes- Liam Gallagher whilst describing the thinking behind Champagne Supernova- set the song as a contrast to the dank miserable, rainy nights they experienced as struggling musicians in Manchester. Morrissey, in justifying his move to California, stated that he had walked home on one cold rainy Manchester night too many- which finally explains his mournful lyrics.
However this city has been the inspiration of a generation of incredible Guitarists, who have greatly influenced the trends of modern music culture/style and remains a cultural outpost of great importance, lets look at a few of these:
1. Eric Stewart- Lead Guitarist of 10cc, who started his career in the mid-sixties with the Mind-benders.
2. David Gray- The brilliant but miserable Acoustic Guitarist/Balladeer, if you've ever been to Manchester you'll know understand the dour nature of his songs.

3. Mark "Cowhead" Day- The Happy Mondays Guitarist, need I say more...

4. Keith Hopwood- Lead Guitarist Herman's Hermits. Decent G

5. Bernard Sumner- Lead Guitarist of the brilliant seminal and criminally underrated Joy Division, which metamorphosed into New Order, which he formed with Peter Hook and Stephen Morris. Also formed Electronic with Jonny Marr, produced the Happy Mondays and sang with the Chemical Brothers
6. Sylvan Richardson- Simply Red Guitarist (Pre- Aziz Ibrahim).
7. Tim Cantsfield- One time Guitarist with Swing Out Sister. On an aside, I claim fame as one being one of the first to hear their first single- Blue Mood, which I filched whilst a lowly employee at London/Polygram Records in 1986, fact is no-one bought the damned record (though I loved it), so they would have probably given it to me anyway.
8. Nick McCabe- Lead Guitarist of the incredible, incomparable The Verve!
9. Jimi Goodwin- Lead Guitarist of the equally brilliant Doves
10. Peter Shelley- Lead Guitarist - The Buzzcocks
11. Tony Hicks- The Hollies
12. Noel Gallagher- Oasis. The Rock life-style and tabloid headlines should not detract from Gallagher's competence as an excellent Guitarist and arranger.
13. Johnny Marr- The Smiths. Whom I've written about previously and who was influential to a whole generation of Guitarists including Gallagher and Aziz Ibrahim.
14. Ian Brown- The Stone Roses.Rhythm Guitarist and Lead vocalist of the Stone Roses.
15. Simon Tong- Lead Guitarist of Verve (after Nick McCabe) and presently Lead Guitarist of my personal favourite band of the moment- The Good The Bad and The Queen.

16. John Squire- Exceptionally gifted Lead Guitarist of the Stone Roses, responsible for three of their greatest hits- Fools Gold, One Love and Waterfall, famous for his versatility he could switch from Indie Flange to Funky with minimal effort. Was replaced by Aziz Ibrahim, Liam Gallagher quoted Ibrahim's recruitment as the hardest job in the world, Squires was kind of a hard act to follow. Squires is also an accomplished artist- a student of Jackson Pollock, whose paintings (Squire's) adorn the front covers of the Stone Roses albums, their Instruments and a record company studio. He recently exhibited at the ICA- The Mall.

17. Damon Gough - aka Badly Drawn Boy. Taciturn and talented and an incredible multi-instrumentalist and producer

Corners and Mirrors

Enough of this introspective stuff I promise, just that a funny thing happened yesterday, being the culmination of 5 days of events and suddenly you turn a corner and bite the bullet.
I've always lived or tried to live by my conscience, I have always put others first and have always sacrificed own interest for the sake of others, even those who acutely dislike me have to admit this and all I've asked for is either gratitude or at best to be left alone in peace, for that is who I am. No one is a greater critic of EK than EK, so I would say to the critics shut up I got there first, wait your turn.
I'm no saint but will say proudly that I live my life with love in my heart and that's all I have to offer this world, I may be an idiot, but no one is forced to associate with me, I am proud of my place on earth and hold my head up high proud of all I've achieved and with no excuses for all I've failed to achieve, because in all honesty it wasn't mine to acquire or keep. There are enough fellow "idiots" on this earth for me to commune with. Life should never have to be a constant battle, there are those who are not happy unless there is a state of attrition, unless they can dominate others and display a palpable arrogance based on some delusional fantasy, well take solace in the fact that you are not alone, history is replete with people with a similar mindset- remember the two World wars?
In addition, vengeful spite and aggro if directed against an adversary may be fair in an agreed theatre of war but is criminal to innocents who suffer in the war of attrition.
I am proud of who I am, very much so and greatly value those close to me, I cannot change who I am and do not wish to, I am an extremely fortunate man and the only lesson I have to offer is that we all have a right to our place on earth and let no one tell you otherwise.
Anyone who seeks to hurt another destroys his own soul, where I have caused hurt by virtue of my own imperfections, I have always tried to make amends by expressing regret an dasking forgiveness- for whether we like it or not, there will always be times we will hurt others, anyone who knows me will tell you that even where I am not guilty of wrong, I always try and be the one to say sorry, because life is too short to prolong hurt and not because I am otherwise weak. Anyone who you show love and who sullies it in any way describable has the problem not you, move on enjoy life thats what its there for.
