All to no A-Veil

Just a brief word on the Veil issue a la Jack Straw.

Who cares? If someone insists on covering her face and body, that is entirely a matter for the said person and indeed if there is some religious connotation behind this then fair enough. The fact I believe is that Jack had a verbal leakage, based on a silly impulse and there has had to be an official line- (i.e we need to bring the issue to a public debate.. yawn! Debate my left calloused toe.Since when did New Labour actually engage in genuine debate) to provide some Intelligent basis for his flippance.

The corollary being that no-one should take issue with a Sikh having his Turban covering his barnet over a Boss Suit and Hobbs shoes, a Pentecostal or Catholic wearing a Cross or Rosary, whatever dude. The fact is nobody really cares. A free society is based on choice as long as no laws are broken.

I personally think the wearing of a veil is absurd, I would not wear one and that is my choice, I shall not be forced to wear one, regardless of the fact that some of my less charitable acquaintances may feel that society is best protected from my mug by some appropriate solid barrier, especially first thing on a saturday morning. However those that choose to wear them should have their choice (the magic word) preserved- simple.

In summary, this is not the main issue that you face and even if it was this is not the way to go about it. Behave Jack, seriously behave dude.

I conclude (once again) by inviting you to view the photo above, I think that sums up my viewpoint (and indeed the title of this Blog), but it is their choice however, which I do respect.

Found the furore around this issue fascinating...and appreciate the rationale behind your reasoning; however I find myself vastly at variance with some of your views on the veil...

Agree absolutely with your assertion that if an individual is most comfortable covering their body with fabric, shrouding their calloused left toe with spandex, or screening half their face with their hair, for that matter, I would be the first to countenance their conviction to cover up their countenance!

And have, indeed, deep respect for those who follow the tenets of any religion religiously, and the greatest admiration for those who apply their beliefs to better themselves. Admire personal and physical modesty too.

However,two issues need uncovering here....

Your freedom of choice hypothesis rests on the presupposition that 'choice' as a concept actually exists, where it could be postulated that such free will is simply a social construct - choices are only a reflection of the society we inhabit. Is any real choice really laid bare in such cases?

Hence this darkly veiled business masks a more serious issue which cannot be covered up, hidden away, or simply dismissed as something that we all should not be getting hot under the turban about. Nor, more's the pity, will it be simply resolved with a sprinkling of laid-back liberalism, even of the sort we all know and love.

Unfortunately, the veil question is, I believe, a fundamental issue of human rights...not of a woman's right to wear it...if only that was the real dichotomy...but of a woman's right to be treated equally with men...(how many of them would look far more fetching in a chador?). If men wore it too, I could regard and respect it as a religious response. But as a symbol of the suppression of women, I abhor the veil and all it stands for; the delineation of woman as a sexual object who needs covering up incase she attracts the lusts and looks of men...in 21st century Britain?

This issue needs debate...and needs to address the very real voiding, veiling and invalidation of individuals that the veil currently veils.
